Area of tension
Leadership rarely fails because of a lack of expertise. It fails when clarity, prioritization, and explicit decisions are lost.
This loss occurs gradually. Decision-making is replaced by assumptions, by interpretation, and by communication that has no impact on decision-making. Issues continue to linger without being resolved. Different perceptions of the situation emerge between your departments and management levels. Numbers, priorities, and narratives drift apart.
Under pressure, this dynamic shifts. Action often takes the place of explicit decision-making. Decisions are effectively in force without having been stated or documented. Complexity increases without any benefit. Communication becomes defensive.
So what now? Speed comes at the cost of letting go. And whoever makes the decision stays with the process until the results are visible.
